"we stan a well-lit king”
I can't believe it's May. Soon it will be June. I wanted to take a ceramics class this year. I wanted my core to be strong.
We have done some things in the last two weeks, but it's hard to remember. The best part of the day is being outside around 5pm, in the late afternoon sun. Me, John and Isha with our jam jars of wine, sparkling water and milk, respectively. The best part of the week is doing the Times crossword on Sunday while eating pancakes. Let's see, what else: We took a long drive through the Angeles forest. I returned the label maker I bought. My husband watched a friend of his eat a whole capsicum (core and all) on Zoom because his friend bet that he could identify them all based on their ears alone. Ears are unique, like fingerprints, so maybe he had a chance but I think he got not a single guess right. I've found comfort in movies from the 80s and 90s like 'Baby Boom' and 'As Good As It Gets'. That's my sweet spot right now as far as era and subject matter. John's selections for movie night have been 'Yesterday' and 'That Thing You Do'.... which.
I have been practicing a lot of Yoga Nidra which has been the most stress-relieving thing by far. It's basically just sleeping but somehow it feels like you've had a 3-hour sleep in 20 minutes, and I go way deeper than I do with meditation. Isha turned two and a half and shockingly, she's developing a full-on American accent. I thought I had longer than this! I know that basically everyone around us speaks with an American accent, but I'm her Mum and I speak to her probably more than anyone- doesn't that cancel out some of the other Americans? Thankfully, you can still hear her Australian-ness in words like Coco and No. I made that dalgona coffee- it was disgusting. I don't know if I did something wrong or what. I've donated and moved around so many things in the house in the past few weeks- the KonMari-ing is not so much "does it bring me joy?" but "can I live with it every day for 7 weeks and not be annoyed by it in some, small way?"
We went to a virtual wedding for our friends Alyx and Micah. It was very beautiful and moving. I teared up during the vows and speeches, as per an IRL wedding. The app they used even had 'tables' you could mingle around on and video chat with other guests. And then there was a stage for the ceremony, a section for the speeches, it was all really well done! There was a live chat scroll next to the speeches and all these comedy twitter types were like “We stan a well-lit king” when Micah's brother was doing his speech- he did have flawless lighting! Micah is one of John's best friends from college in Rochester from many years ago, and Alyx is a friend of mine from Sydney. We didn't know the connection when John and I met (here in LA). He said "one of my best friends lives in Sydney" and I said "oh yeah, I've met Micah!" Ridiculous.
An article: “TEMPORARY RED DOT”
A TV show: Dave on FX
A movie: Bad Education on HBO
An inspiration: I read this George Nakashima piece last month and haven't been able to shake it. One of my favorite genres of article is someone who has completely dedicated their life to their passion or their craft (see also this article). I find it endlessly inspiring since I'm in more of a "what do you need? I could do this or this or this or this?" headspace usually.
A playlist: I forgot to link to this last time. It has been on high rotation around here, shared by Jenna Wortham.
A documentary: Michael Jordan doc 'The Last Dance duh
A garden: A stroll through the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Japanese Garden. We were looking at photos from 2 years ago when we were staying in Crown Heights for a month and went to see the Cherry Blossoms there at this time. It's my favorite time of year in New York.
A cord cover: Look at this beautiful cord cover my friend Kristin made for me. (Cord cover! What a concept! ref: Russian Doll)
